Africa MediaWorks – the UK’s first award for contemporary African Photography.

In 2018, I produced and co-curated the UK’s first award for contemporary African Photography.

The work of 19 African artists were nominated by five expert judges from across the African continent. Their work was exhibited in a group show at HKS Architects on Great Titchfield Street, London. More than 700 people attended the exhibition’s opening night.

Many of the artists on show had never been exhibited outside of Africa before. One overall winner, the South African documentary photographer Sabelo Mlangeni, received a £5,000 award towards future work.

The British Journal of Photography announced the news of Sabelo’s winning the prize. You can read about it here.

The exhibition also gained press at Time Out, Vice, The Evening Standard, Refinery29 and Culture Trip.

That’s me with James Barnor, an 89-year-old charmer and a legendary Ghanian photographer, on the opening night.
